INDIVIDUAL & FAMILY COUNSELING
In-Home, School, or Our Office
In recent years the number of children and adults with special needs being served in public schools and finding jobs in regular less restrictive settings, has drastically increased. The difficulties relating to therapy services for families with special needs individuals, have long been a threshold for the mental health practitioner to provide adequate services. Apart from issues like resolving ongoing grief and loss, trauma, relationships problems, depression, anxiety, etc., it has often the additional challenges related to communication and developmental issues on a variety of developmental levels.
The severity and multiplicity of the mental health needs of families and
children or adults with special needs, presents a unique and complex task
for families, schools, ancillary professionals, and other caretakers.
Cultural considerations as well as empowerment, problem solving as well as
safety issues, are only examples of targets that should not be overlooked
and written of as less important, or even caused by the developmental
disability. Individuals with developmental delays can have mental health
problems at the same or higher rate as the general population, and we have
the responsibility to treat them optimally.
For More Information
Individuals such as for instance children who show symptoms of Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or other behavioral difficulties specifically related to cognitive, emotional and/or physical challenges, need a different communication techniques and adapted interventions. With these needs and challenges, new and comprehensive resources are required, to design and implement effective, efficient experiences that assure learning to take place as well as healing. The availability and development of these techniques and resources is an ongoing concern for those serving this target population.
